Day 63

One of the many great things about Sunset Destination Hostel is that breakfast is homemade and free to all guests! I ate fresh pancakes with cream cheese (because I'll put cream cheese on anything) and drank fresh-squeezed apple juice. We ate on the terrace--so nice!

Because there was a chance of rain (I guess), the walking tour was cancelled. We ended up just wandering around the city, which is extremely beautiful, by the way. It's literally the European version of San Francisco. There's a Golden Gate bridge (pictured above) which is red and designed by the same guy who designed the actual Golden Gate bridge, there's cable cars, all the buildings are pretty and pastel, it's super hilly, etc. I loved it all!

We went to the cathedral, which had a really neat treasury and cloister. The cloister was an active excavation site, so that was really interesting to see.

Super creepy Mary and Jesus

We signed the treasury guest book!

Here are some more pics of what we saw when we were walking around beautiful Lisbon!

Cork products are apparently a big deal in Portugal. Here are some cork hats and a beanbag!

We had a delicious lunch at one of the suggested restaurants on the city map the hostel gave us. It was such a pretty little restaurant! I had toast with eggplant, zucchini, goat cheese, and mozzarella--some of my very favorite foods!

We also (with discounted student tickets) checked out the Sao Jorge castle. (Maybe you can tell I'm just letting the pictures do all the talking on this post).

Very windy!

Peacocks like to live in palaces, I guess!

We had been pretty lucky all day weather-wise, but once we left the castle, it got nasty. After popping into a few cool handmade goods shops, we booked it back to our hostel to rest a little before going to dinner. The weather only got worse, so we ended up eating at the cool food court/market place again (no complaints there). This time I had a traditional Portuguese sandwich that was basically just an amazing portobello burger. Loved it! Katie and I wanted to get dessert after, but were kind of full, so we ended up getting these really yummy hard ciders instead. They seriously had everything at that place: gourmet restaurants, semi-fast food, liquor stores, little bars, pastry shops, you name it.  Even a stand that only sold this one brand of delicious hard cider!

Once again, we went to bed with hopes of going on a walking tour in the morning...
