Summer '16 Trip: Day 5

On Wednesday morning, we woke up, got dressed, packed up, checked out, and headed to the train station. Once again, we appreciated the fact that the hostel was so close to it. We had no trouble getting there, reserving seats for a train to Salzburg, and keeping ourselves busy before getting on the train.

It was an incredibly short train trip! Less than two hours, in fact. And compared to the train we'd taken from Berlin to Munich, it felt like absolutely nothing. We sat near a few "Australian frat daddies" (as Kayla dubbed them), which certainly made things interesting. They didn't really talk to us or anything, but they were quite entertaining to listen to. They were all passing around one of the guys' phones, reading and editing a text that he wrote to some girl. One of them commented, "She's definitely going to cry," so we think he must have cheated on his girlfriend while traveling Europe. We were not pleased with their behavior.

Anywho, we actually did have a little trouble upon our arrival in Salzburg. Unlike a big city train station like those in Berlin, the signs weren't very clear at all. It took us some time to figure out where we caught the S-Bahn train we needed to get to our hostel, but eventually we got it. After two stops on the S3, we walked a couple minutes to finally arrive at the hostel.

They let us check in right away, which was great. It's actually a combination of a hotel and a hostel, so overall it was very nice. After putting away our things, we went out to find lunch close by.

Salzburg, being a small city, practices the European tradition of closing down restaurants in between lunch and dinner. Luckily, the grocery store in the shopping center next to the hostel had a little cafe where we ate our lunch. It was surprisingly yummy! And very cheap. They even gave us huge, cold glasses of tap water.

We decided to spend the rest of the afternoon scoping out the Salzburg City Center. I remembered where several things were from my brief visit to the city two years ago, so we just kind of followed my memory and did some basic sightseeing.

Bad picture, but it's a Steiff store!

Another bad picture, but look at the cute treble clef pretzels!

At one point, in the beginning of our time exploring, we stopped to get some ice cream. It did not disappoint!

We had dinner at an Italian place. The food was pretty good, and it was all very reasonably priced. I decided to try my hand at getting more free water, but I was not surprised to find that they only give out teeny tiny glasses of tap water. I ended up ordering a Radler anyway, and Kayla got a Coke.

Pretty exhausted from traveling and from the heat (our hostel was a 1.5 mile walk from the city center, just fyi), we got ready for bed and started to watch Hannah Montana: The Movie on Netflix. The WiFi speed was amazing! Better than at my parents' house or on the St. John's campus, that's for sure. We really didn't get very far into the movie, though, because we were tired and needed to get up early the next day for our SOUND OF MUSIC TOUR!
