Travel day!
Kayla and I got up and said goodbye to our AirBNB in Berlin
(for now), and headed to the train station to set off for Munich. Well, we went
to a couple train stations. First we went to Alexanderplatz to activate our
Eurail passes and to reserve seats on the train we wanted to take (it costs a
little extra, but we like sitting together). We had a run-in with some beggars
who we initially thought just needed directions, but we managed to escape them.
They weren’t violent or dangerous or anything, but we obviously didn’t feel
comfortable pulling out our wallets in the middle of the station. Then, we were
off to the main station, the Hauptbahnhof, to catch our train.
We had some “breakfast” (pastries and McDonald’s fries—not our
proudest moment), stocked up on some snacks, and bought a headphone splitter so
we could watch movies together on all our trains.
Boarding the train was interesting. We kind of fumbled around
trying to put our big suitcases somewhere, but luckily some guy helped us out.
Once we were in our seats, though, all was well. We watched The Sound of Music, I worked on this
blog (that’s my new plan now, to write all my blog posts on our train trips),
and just rested and chilled. It was about a 6-hour trip—not too bad.
Luckily, our hostel in Munich was less than a 5-minute walk
from the train station. We checked in with no problems, and they even gave us
free drink vouchers. The room was pretty nice, although very hot, especially
since we both got stuck with top bunks. We had four roommates, and they were
all easy enough to share space with.
We hadn’t really eaten anything of substance all day, so we
felt it was important to go have dinner. We picked a typical/traditional German
restaurant not too far from our hostel (which wasn’t too far from the city
center). It was yummy! I’d been craving spaetzle and Radler for soooooooooooo
long. Kayla had pork roast (in a juice that she was obsessed with) with a
potato dumpling (that she was not obsessed with).
After having dinner and doing some window shopping, we headed
back to the hostel to claim our free drinks at the bar. You could only get a
small beer or glass of wine, but hey, free is free. We were having fun talking
to people there, so we got a big, cheap pitcher of tequila sunrise, and also
tried the “shot of the night” (because it was called Jedi Juice).
All in all, it was a very good time! I understand why some
people are iffy about hostels, but I’ve generally had great experiences with
them. And Munich is just such a fun, cool city.
